Lithium Polymer Batteries

lithium polymer batteries would be more correctly described as lithium-ion batteries irrespective of the abbreviation used - LiPo, LIP, Li-poly, lithium-poly.

These are rechargeable batteries utilising lithium-ion technology and have a semisolid (gel) electrolyte instead of a liquid electrolyte. These batteries all use different types of Lithium compound for the Cathode from NMC to LiCoO but it is the electrolytes which are the flammable part in (all cases) and not specifically the lithium compound.

There are also Primary lithium batteries which are not usually rechargeable and these use lithium metal and not compounds of lithium. They still contain electrolytes and will still burn but the great majority of the larger energy dense batteries which you will meet are more correctly described as Lithium ion batteries.
